From 1 October to the first weekend of November, Barcelona fills up with pumpkins, witches and mystery tunnels made for little ones, and on 31 October and 1 November comes the Castanyada, with roasted chestnuts, sweet potatoes and panellets. How to choose a Halloween plan by age

For the youngest, pumpkin workshops, storytelling and daytime costume parties with no scares work best. From about 6 or 7, children enjoy trails with characters and clue hunts, and mystery tunnels often come in different scare levels: ask at the entrance which one is the gentlest. Each listing shows the recommended age, opening hours and price.

The Castanyada with kids: chestnuts, sweet potatoes and panellets

The Castanyada is the traditional Catalan autumn festival: on the eve of All Saints’ Day people eat roasted chestnuts, baked sweet potatoes and panellets, almond sweets coated in pine nuts, and the grown-ups drink muscat wine. Around those dates the castanyeres, chestnut sellers with their stalls of hot chestnuts, come back to the streets, and many schools, community centres and civic centres run panellet workshops and autumn parties. With little ones, making panellets at home is one of the most rewarding plans: the dough is shaped by hand and everyone decorates their own.
