Five genuinely free things to do with kids in Barcelona: the big park in the city centre, with its waterfall and its ducks; an outdoor play space for ages 0 to 5; the giant octopus at La Pegaso; one of the city's best children's libraries and the slide tower at Can Batlló. No tickets, no booking and available all year round.
Our selection
Parc de la Ciutadella
0-12 yearsBarcelona's big city-centre park: the monumental Cascada fountain, the lake, the duck pond, the stone mammoth and plenty of grass to run around on. It has play areas with slides and, inside the same park, La Ludo, the play space for the youngest (the next plan in this guide).
ℹ️ Barcelona Zoo is inside the park, but it charges entry.
La Ludo (Parc de la Ciutadella)
0-5 yearsA free municipal play space for families with children aged 0 to 5, right in Parc de la Ciutadella. Outside there is a play area with toys for everyone and a children's vegetable garden; inside, a story corner, a construction area and a sensory exploration space with natural materials. There are educators on hand, but play is free.
ℹ️ Children must always be with an adult. There are no toilets on site.
El Pulpo del Parc de la Pegaso
4-10 yearsOne of the most spectacular play structures in the city: a giant octopus with a slide, bridges, a climbing net, a vertical ladder and balance beams, on a sandy floor. The park is very spacious with plenty of room around it, perfect for going as a group.
ℹ️ Benches and a drinking fountain next to the play area.
Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez
0-12 yearsNamed the world's best public library in 2023 by IFLA, with a children's room to match: a reading corner with cushions, a sensory space and storytelling. It's indoors and air-conditioned, so it saves any rainy or very hot day.
ℹ️ Check its events calendar: it runs free children's activities. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays it closes at midday.
Can Batlló (la Bordeta)
0-12 yearsA play super-area of over 1,000 m² on the old Can Batlló factory site. The star is a 9-metre metal tower with three enclosed slides, the tallest with an 11-metre drop. There are also trampolines, swings (including inclusive ones), seesaws, spinners and a sandpit.
ℹ️ Bar with a terrace next door. Long trousers are best for the slides.
How to make the most of Barcelona's free plans
Enjoying Barcelona with kids doesn't have to cost money. The city has parks with one-of-a-kind play areas, municipal play spaces and libraries with children's rooms that charge no entry. In this guide we've picked five that work for different ages and are spread across the city: Ciutat Vella, Sant Andreu, Sant Martí and Sants-Montjuïc.
A trick that works: combine two plans in one outing. La Ludo is inside Parc de la Ciutadella, so you can spend the morning in the play space with the little ones and then walk on to the Cascada fountain. Go early, because La Ludo closes at 13:30. And save the Gabriel García Márquez library for rainy or very hot days: it's indoors and air-conditioned.
Mother to mother: at the parks, early morning and late afternoon are the quietest times, especially on the Can Batlló slides. And if you want more ideas, BabaMap's map has over 350 free places with photos, opening hours and comments from other families.
Frequently asked questions
What can you do for free with kids in Barcelona?
Much more than you'd think: parks with one-of-a-kind play areas, like the octopus at La Pegaso or the slide tower at Can Batlló; municipal play spaces, like La Ludo in Parc de la Ciutadella; and libraries' children's rooms, like the one at Gabriel García Márquez. All five plans in this guide are free and need no booking.
Are there free plans for babies and under-3s?
Yes: La Ludo, designed for children aged 0 to 5 who always come with an adult, and the children's room at the Gabriel García Márquez library, with a sensory space and storytelling. The lawns of Parc de la Ciutadella and the sandpit at Can Batlló also work really well for the youngest.
Which free plan works on a rainy day?
The Gabriel García Márquez library: it's indoors and air-conditioned, so it saves both a rainy day and a very hot one. It's closed on Sundays.
Is the zoo in Parc de la Ciutadella free?
No. The park is free, but Barcelona Zoo, which is inside it, charges entry. The Cascada fountain, the walks by the lake, the play areas and La Ludo cost nothing.
Do I need to book?
No, none of the five plans needs booking. At La Ludo it is worth checking the opening hours before you go: it closes at midday and only opens in the afternoon from Monday to Thursday.
